Stijgende Zeespiegel
Viola concerto by Kate Moore
Subject:
The Environment and the Viola
Rising sea levels duet to global warming and the unfathomable consequence of heat.
The composition, explores facets of depth, streaming currents and saturation. The notion of a tidal waterscape that inundates a landscape is portrayed through the micro and macro structure of wave patterns through internal division and inter-relationships of rhythm and meter, creating a groundswell from within the music that on the surface is imperceptible, that keeps growing internally, unstoppably, becoming more and more intense and more and more powerful. The music explores self-similar patterns, fractals and micro and macro structures where the shape of the inner structure reflects the overall structure such as a wave that upon closer observation is made of waves within waves within waves.
Water and sound saturates, submerges and dissolves a turbulent maelstrom of refracting light, distorted reflections and twisting and undulating, shimmering light. Enveloping a splintered reality, liquid music macerates melting objects, merging fluid forms and embraces ribbons of colour sinking and evaporating. The currents rise, subduing a trembling landscape poised in motion. The lofty sea of peaks and troughs expands pervasively. Silvery tongues, grab at obstacles, greedily devouring their kill and swallowing into unchartered depths bereft of sound. A silent gasp flickers beneath the surface and becomes seaweed, lulled by the ocean’s slow sway. The gentle rocking of submerged streams, push and pull, like breath, like a heartbeat, pulsing and breathing with the rising power of Nature’s mighty force.
