Saint Mary and the spider
Saint Mary and the Spider is a performance installation that features Cassini porcelain sound sculpture and Pace, a hand-crafted Dutch cello by Saskia Schouten, known for the peace insignia carved into its back. The performance was made in response to the composer’s residency at Civitella Ranieri in Umbria. Connecting with the iconography of Saint Mary, the tradition of the tarantella and the scientist Cassini, the music draws from an ancient iconography, history, philosophy and the tradition of story telling. The installation is a ritual space, pure like a well spring, inviting reflection, simultaneously referencing the rosary and dance. The sculpture is a gentle tribute to the death of the Cassini probe in the atmosphere of Saturn, the suspended porcelain depicting the shards and splinters of rocks and minerals that make up the delicate rings of the planet.
